I've grown quite fond of mulch. Beautiful to be out, and an enforced end time when the stuff I had to throw away exceeded the space I have in the trash barrel. By a lot. Pretty much done for the year, maybe some more raking, but I'm going to be gathering piles and tossing them in the barrel for weekends to come.

Time for a dog walk through the neighborhood. And to see — for the first time since we moved here — the extent of some of the Halloween decorations around (click for larger):

<img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dgbB6Pyvem8/Su5Z_RAzBjI/AAAAAAAABsM/gvLUnwO1wd4/s320/neighbor03.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399351946697180722" width="157"/> <img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dgbB6Pyvem8/Su5Z-kjrNRI/AAAAAAAABsE/o60agZHzQFs/s320/neighbor02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399351934763873554" width="157" /> <img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dgbB6Pyvem8/Su5Z-FC2FfI/AAAAAAAABr8/VRckxKAde5g/s320/neighbor01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399351926304675314" width="157" />

Our across-the-street neighbor made the best of the road construction:

<img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dgbB6Pyvem8/Su5avD5-uKI/AAAAAAAABsc/d1AH6rCNaG8/s320/face02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399352767812647074" width="238" /> <img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dgbB6Pyvem8/Su5avDbbI-I/AAAAAAAABsU/wQQjolV-cpg/s320/face01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399352767684486114" width="238" />

It all started around 5:20, a few families with really little kids. Most of whom, we think we were out on their first Halloweens. One group, we were their first stop on their first outing:

I'm not sure the dog helped with their apprehension there. We'd positioned a borrowed baby gate in the doorway and propped the outer glass door open (because it swings out into the way of any kids and, after experimenting, realized that the gate on the landing would only lead to a trip to the emergency for one of us). For those first couple, Cheyenne was very interested, even jumping up on the gate. Luckily, the novelty quickly wore off and she spent most of the rest of the night in bed.

I feel like there were fewer than last year, but maybe not by as much as originally thought. More little kids, a lower percentage of too-old teenagers, it seemed like a lot of ladybugs. Favorite costumes: one group that had two kids in one big jacket, each head with a fedora and Groucho glasses; the little boy with them, dressed in all white with a black and white plaid baseball hat, white beard, and a handwritten sign on his chest that said "God."

oh for cute!

Really? Again, beautiful fall weather, so made a Santa Fe kind of morning out of it. A walk to the Farmers Market, hanging out with the dogwatcher there, making some new friends, and picking up some root vegetables — golden beets to have roasted and over salad, and a black radish that we have no idea what to do with.

But look at it, how weird … how could we resist?

Kicked around some and then stopped by Teca Tu to restock Cheyenne's treats. And to get her an early birthday present: a grunty hedgehog that she carried home for all of a couple minutes.

It's now in the closet, "recharging."

The rest of the weekend was all chores. That afternoon, we finally uncovered the compost that we'd sealed off in the winter when Cheyenne got too interested in it. And … soil!

Huh. It works.

Still needs more time, though, so turned it all, rebuilt the straw walls, and rewrapped the pile, now about 2/3 the size it was. Maybe will be good enough in the spring.

Then it was returning that Russian Olive to the back yard. In its mulched form, from the pile that's been residing in our driveway. That picked up again Sunday afternoon, after cleaning and groceries. Monica, off from work Monday, set about scraping and caulking and painting the canales … we're looking at a lot of chore catch-up this month.

Andy and the Weekend that was Last Weekend

Retrieved Andy at the airport Thursday night, one of the last flights in. Friday arrived, earlier for some of us than others, with better weather than threatened — no hard freeze overnight, and clear blue skies and the promise of '60s for the day. Mon was working, but Andy and I discussed the plans over breakfast outside at Tune-Up. It was too nice and too yellow to not head up the mountain, the only question was, "to do what?" Hike, stroll Aspen Vista, ride the ski lift? Andy opted for the latter. And, once there, suggested we just buy the one-way ticket.

Ride was start and stop, probably almost 20 minutes to the summit (11,250', not the 12,075' mistakenly identified below; that came later). Where it was plenty cold and windy.

A few photos, some binocular viewing, and, though we were layered up, had to get moving. Andy pointed up to the adjoining peak with the cell phone towers, and off we went. Those thousand or so feet took us a while, stopping to admire the view, watch the controlled burn, and trying to breathe.

But at the top, felt good enough to walk the ridge and find another way down. The return path might've been even tougher, loose rocks and a steep slope making for some extra-cautious going, with the destination in view, seemingly so close.... About three hours out total, chili dogs at the grill at the base area. And, on the drive down, a short stop off to soak out some of the soreness at Ten Thousand Waves.

That evening, after some resting up, out to High Mayhem for Tim's gallery opening.

Stuck around to watch some Cake In Ya Face, then off to Lan's for a big dinner. Which left us all too logy to continue on to Cowgirl to catch Joe West — so back home for some of the long-awaited Middleman DVD that Andy brought us.

Saturday, all dragged ourselves out for a walk in the cool autumn morning with the dog who, while pretty well-behaved, had clearly not been herself with the stitches that needing biting and the scrapes that needed licking and the subsequent necessity of wearing a muzzle and/or shirt most of the time. Eased into the morning from there, then set out, beginning with a walk through the Farmers Market to Flying Star for a big breakfast, then driving off to Puye for a tour of the cliff dwellings.

The site recently re-opened and it now requires a guided tour. The fee is a bit steep (as is the paved path up), but if it goes toward the further restoration of the site and expansion of the tours, it'll be worth it — as our guide noted, "we don't want to be Bandelier." Gone are their Harvey days of "free-range tourism," in their place, a short but interesting overview (both kinds) and a look at some amazingly preserved ruins and petroglyphs.

Returned for an early start to our last grill of the season. Fired up the pit early on, as it cooled once we were in the shade, and continued out there into the night for cigars and dinner and s'mores (some made with the chocolate cookies Mon had baked … mmmmm).

Stopped by Counter Culture on our way out Sunday morning for the egregiously large cinnamon bun and breakfast, then off to the airport. Returning, Mon and I were able to swing by the Harwood for the tail end of the 24 Hour Comics Day event there to see what everyone had been up to and help clean. Like we did, you can follow the activity from the blog and the Flickr site.

Because she'd been so good and long-suffering, an extra-long walk with Cheyenne that evening.

Andy Was Here

Andy just left after a couple eventful days here; pictured above with me at <strike>12,075</strike> 11,250 feet. But it threw off our plan to get Cheyenne back to the vet's to follow up on the four-week course of antibiotics for that UTI she couldn't seem to kick.

So, off first thing Saturday morning, before breakfast or anything to get her tested. And, when we emerged an hour later, it was so beautiful (the overnight freezing temperatures have passed), that going out to the dog park seemed a great idea. Since California Pastrami was again closed — for the third time in a row we've tried — we just grabbed bagels and headed out.

It's 22 acres, fenced, and usually folks head out with their dogs and walk the perimeter, meeting and collecting a pack on the way. Cheyenne's gotten better about leaving the lizards alone and actually walking the path with us. When we met up with a Beagle pair and a black-and-white Akita named Lotus, she was pretty happy to go along with the group and actually play, dashing off and running around occasionally.

And then back to the shelter by the entrance for water and shade; we were ready to head home, but a new group arrived, and Cheyenne wanted to follow. Included a beautiful Ridgeback puppy, a couple hounds, and an Akita(?) mix named Jack that she was, again — and to our surprise and delight — happy to play with. But they got to running, both cornered hard, and everybody went flying and skidding; Jack, all muscle and fur, bounced back up, ready to run some more. Cheyenne, a bit more shaken and with thin skin and no fat, was all scraped up from sliding across the rough ground, and with a quarter-size chunk out of her back.

Our parking space at the vet's was still open.

Stitched up and at home, glaring at at us for trying to keep her from licking it, she then had to suffer through the vacuum and the afternoon of chores preparing for Andy's arrival.

But today — the great big annual Greyhound reunion — GCNM brought together New Mexico's Greys and their humans. Should we go? Would she be up to it? Would they see the stitches and repossess her? Given the opportunity and the beautiful day, we hurriedly got our stuff together and drove off.

We signed is as #229 and, though I suspect they started at 100, that still meant quite a turnout. All kinds of thin, tall, pretty dogs ignoring each other (not entirely true, but certainly much more sedate than your average canine gathering).

(click for much larger, find Mon and Cheyenne — pretty much next to, as it turns out, her fosters, who we were trying to find all afternoon)

Passed the afternoon meeting other dogs (nobody even bothered to introduce themselves, just mentioning their dogs' names). A few hours, then back home (via Sonic, of course).

-=-=-=-=-=

Watching the Ken Burns national parks documentary now (I've never actually watched a Burns documentary, y'know). Pretty amazing, isn't it? Time was, before we moved to the West, vacations were often planned around being able to make it to a national park in a day's travel, and preferably staying somewhere on the park. Our travels have taken us to (including monuments), let's see, off the top of my head: Shenandoah, Big Bend, Badlands, Wind Cave, Devil's Tower, Guadalupe, Carlsbad, White Sands, Bandelier, El Malpais, Petroglyph, Tent Rocks, Olympic, and Hot Springs (my regret about the drive out here was bypassing Smoky Mountains).

-=-=-=-=-=

Also: those spindly plants in the front yard are asters. Overnight temperatures have taken their toll, but we've got an amazing wildflower meadow out front now.

Telling Stories Around The Fire

And in a nice bit of meta-ness, we were probably telling stories about telling stories. Our comics-making friend Marc was in town for an all-too-brief visit; we collected him at the airport Saturday around 5:30 and had him out on a noon flight Sunday.

We'd only finally met him for the first time — in another whirlwind visit — at STAPLE! this past year, after years of email exchanges, a bit of collaboration, and the occasional phone call.

So we spent plenty of time just hanging out and talking. And having dinner at La Choza, where Marc won the "guess the server's name" game. The first time in, like, ten years that's happened.

Anyway. I'd spent the morning at Tripleplay, a seminar presented by our local AIGA group. Good fun, a nice break and view on design. In the meantime, Monica had walked over to Sanbusco, where I joined her for the monthly GCNM meet and greet.

Sunday morning, breakfast with Jamie and then the run to the airport. Left us some time for the dog park before heading to Stacy and Jim's for a dinner party; she's got some friends in town, so it was another big night of visiting.

Good thing we enjoyed that fire outside when we could. Hit around 33° last night, and there's danger of a hard freeze tonight; the green tomatoes are in the house now.

One Day, Her Vengeance Will Be Swift, Terrible — And Completely Justified

Cheyenne, Not So Sure About This Zozobra Thing

Opted to watch Zozobra on one of the new digital channels this year, after bringing Whole Hog to M+D (and returning with many, many … so many peaches they'd been picking at the house they're sitting).

Anyway, the sound seemed to be plugged directly into the PA, so there was no crowd noise (kind of weird) and Old Man Gloom's moans were really loud. Arrived in Albuquerque around the time the show opened on Saturday and got the table — set up the previous day by a few others — up and running for the day.

(More photos at the 7000 BC flickr stream.)

Jamie was on one side of us, our friends from Hadrosaur on the other, with Robert on the corner; other members joined us throughout the day, helping out at the table and leading some comics-making activities. Felt like traffic was lighter (even though Bubonicon notes record attendance), but our sales by the end of Saturday already topped last year's showing at the three-day event.

Dinner outing to Viet Taste for a little pho (!), and then back the con hotel (where we had a room), staying up way, way, way too late. Still managed to get up early enough on Sunday to get Robert out for a big Flying Star breakfast; stuck around a couple hours, then said our goodbyes and handed the table over to go home and collect our dog because …

M+D In Town
We actually saw them a bit on Saturday night; they arrived into ABQ on Friday and spent Saturday out at Acoma, then stopped in at the con for a bit. Sunday, we took our separate ways up to Santa Fe and met for dinner at J+J's, where M+D will be housesitting for the next couple weeks. Wonderful grilled fish dinner and, though our plans to eat outside were thwarted, some pretty amazing thunderstorms in the distance.

We caught up with them a bit over the course of the week, and then decided on a hike up to Aspen Vista on Saturday morning. Beautiful up there, though no leaves turning yet.

And just as we got to the point where we usually turn around — but were feeling like pushing on a bit more — there was a roll of thunder. And that was as far as Cheyenne would go. Back down the mountain, drove out side road to avoid all the goings-on at Fort Marcy Park, and lunch at Tarts Treats.

Monday, looking for a little outdoor activity, finally made it out to Audobon New Mexico.

Short loop trails in the actual center, but followed a well-used path that heads off into surrounding forested open space. Good for an hour-and-a-half or so out and then off to California Pastrami which was, inexplicably for the second time in as many weeks, closed. So, Tune-Up Cafe for a real local (in a good and bad way) lunch.

In there somewhere was my birthday dinner outing, an evening with an epic stack from True Believers and more of the conclusion of BSG, an interview and article about NMFF and then plenty of subsequent skipping of fencing (though there for the annual
repainting), and a couple lunches with M+D when they headed downtown to the museums. It may not seem like much all summed up, but it's been a pretty busy couple weekends. And we've got more to look forward to, with Marc's visit, the <a href="http://www.gcnm.org/Reunion2009.pdf" target=_"blank">gathering of the greyhounds, Andy's visit, and a whole bunch of other activities taking us into October.

it's that time of year again...

Attn: anyone who wants to send us any gloom to have burned at Zozobra, get that stuff in the mail to us asap! A few tailgaters had already set up, but we wandered the area for a bit — it's really nice up there …

And then went to the Prelude Talk given by Oliver Prezant. Given the ribbing and banter from audience members who'd caught him before, figured it'd be more on the lighthearted side — and it was, lively, providing some background on the tale and glimpses of the things that, if we knew anything about opera, we'd probably know enough to appreciate.

Back to the car for tailgate. Had been thinking about this for a few days; one of Mon's co-workers brings a tub of KFC, other operagoers go all out. Turns out what we both wanted was subs from The Italian Store in Arlington. Since that wasn't gonna happen, had to put together our own facsimile; ingredients from the new Sunflower Farmers Market that just opened up the street.

Time for a drink and people-watching inside the gates, one of the most enjoyable parts. Then, up (and up and up) to our seats. They weren't exactly the cheapest ones, but we were pretty much at the top row of the mezzanine; would've been nicer to be closer, but I don't think it diminshed the experience. Performers were far away, but we had the binoculars and also got a view into the orchestra pit. Though the opera was in English, the little glowing screens in front of everyone's seat flashed the lyrics, so there was nothing lost (and it made a pretty funny visual, looking down on all the blinking lights in the darkness of the audience).

And the show was everything the creators set out to do and the reviews say — fast-paced, entertaining, accessible. Unfamiliar with opera, I'm sure we were missing out on plenty of the nuances and depth, but swept up in it (first time I looked at my watch it was 15 minutes 'til the end). We had a good time — and the reviewers who know about these things assure us we did; check the WSJ, the New Mexican, and the Reporter.

The music, Monica noted, was more movie score than what we think of as opera; the scene changes were also interesting, the stage described by Oliver as a "Murphy Bed set," sliding moving pieces that felt like cinematic transitions.

I'm not sure how well I'd do a "real" opera, but this one was great, and know we know what it's all about. All in all, a pleasant time, a nice change. Until the car died leaving the parking lot (probably the fuel pump) and we had to wait for a tow home. Sigh. It was a late night, so until James comes over for a barbecue, we're having a bit of a Greyhound day.

OK, here:

Bram + Cheyenne, Aspen Vista

Kernel Panic!

Sigh. From opposite directions, we made the trek to the opening for Mix Friday night.

Jamie was experimenting more with scale and subject; as usual, the paintings were amazing. The gallery produced a video about his process; it's interesting, after years of working with him, we'd never actually seen Jamie paint:

Danny got there under his own power and joined us for the evening. You can't take him and and Monica anywhere.

(Traditional Jamie In Front Of His Art Portrait here)

Saturday morning, as a part of preparations for the day, we got to stop by Tarts' Treats. The homemade lox was tasty, the fruit scone was delicious, dogs are welcome (and petted and given water) on the patio; we chatted with Rebecca, the owner, who seems a pretty awesome person.

And then it was time for the 7000 BC meeting/workshop at Warehouse 21. We had one enthusiastic particpant — and then waited over an hour for the rest to show up (promised at 1:30 that one of the students' mom was picking up a bunch more). I mean, we don't expect anyone in Santa Fe to show up on time … but really? And hour and twenty mintues? Anyway, it came together and teachers much more tolerant than me ran a good class; photos at the Flickr stream.

Sunday was due to be chore day, someone shops and someone cleans. While we were all putting it off, the Greyhound Scream Of Death came from outside. We ushered her back inside, looked her over, Monica thought she was squatting when it happened. Soon, we realized the horrible yelps were coming when she was trying to pee … and there went the rest of the day at "e-vet". Nothing against the great folks there; plenty of much more pressing emergencies (and she managed to find a new boyfriend in the vet tech). After several hours, turns out Cheyenne was suffering from a "raging urinary tract infection." I'm figuring, being such a tough girl, she hid her symptoms for a while. Eventually we all arrived home, awfully beat; painkillers and antibiotics solved Cheyenne's problem pretty quickly.

Further Thoughts on the All-Stars

OK, not to get too weird and stalker-y on the Santa Fe All-Stars — because I fear sometimes I can be with independent creators (as, nominally, one myself) — but there's something I left out of my recent post. These things happen, I'm composing them in my head for a while, but some of it drops during the actual typing …

The Santa Fe All-Stars make me wish I could play an instrument.

I got no sense for it, and even after several years of clarinet back in junior high, I'm sure I couldn't even make sense of sheet music in front of me. But the way they perform up on stage, it's a gathering of people who are very, very good at playing music who genuinely seem to really, really enjoy the opportunity to play with other similarly talented folks. They look to be having such a good time, as are the people watching them. Makes me jealous.

That first time we caught them at Tiny's, they were doing sets of about 45-60 minutes. During the break, members would head out into the crowd, meeting and talking with people they knew, catching their breath. I'm sure Susan spent some time with us and then … time clouds it … was it her or Joe? Somebody just got back on stage, started noodling around, was joined by whichever one I'm getting wrong. It became recognizable … House of the Rising Sun. Gradually, everyone else just came up on stage and joined in in a gentle imprprovisational (?) jam. It was the anniversary of Katrina, but the moment — this is why you catch live music, to get those times where it just all comes together.

As I said, jealous.

Sunday: Ferocious Lizard Hunter; Death Bed

Sunday morning, we took Cheyenne up to the 22-acre fenced dog park at the Humane Society. There's a well-worn path around the perimeter, so headed out to do the circuit while trying to eat our breakfast burritos. For the first stretch, she was with us; after the second corner, she spent more time out in the middle, circling the cactus and brush, snurfling for lizards.

By the time we were around the third corner, she was lost to us out there, no interest in walking along. Only returned, all tired and hot from the hunt, to join us in the shade of a bush to lie in the dirt and cool. We snapped the leash on her and went to hang out with the cluster of other dogs in the little bit of shade by the entrance.

Since having her leashed kinda defeats the purpose of being in the dog park, we took her off — and were following her back out into the brush soon enough. Closing in on her, circling a cactus, watched as she lunged headfirst into a cholla … and came up with something in her mouth. Earlier wondering "what do we do if she actually catches one?", our response was confirmed: not much, since she can outrun us. Luckily, she kind of trotted up near me, ex-skink proudly hanging out of her mouth. Then dropped it to run off after more.

Later, extracting quarter-inch-long spines from her paw, noted that this tough girl who didn't even notice them was the dog that let out the Greyhound Scream Of Death when we startled her in the car earlier.

That evening, over to Jon and Suzanne's for a showing of Death Bed, The Bed That Eats. We MST3K-ed our way through it over dinner, all the while marveling at … well, I guess, the Death Bed-ness of it all. I mean, it lives up to the title. To cleanse the palate, rounded out the night with Jesus Christ, Vampire Slayer. IMHO, not enough musical numbers.

car project

Most of y'all remember my 1991 Nissan Sentra XE, right? Well, here it is, in front of our house, still kickin'. This is a great little car, always starts, good gas mileage. My mechanic here referred to it as "stealth" — meaning it runs great, but no one's going to look at it twice.

There are many many dings and scrapes, the lovely blue Rustoleum paint job is staring to fade and peel. And the headliner has been sagging for years.

I tried to tack it up with some spray glue (those yellow spots) when it first started to go, back in 2004 or so. But the problem is that the headliner itself is not just the fabric that you see. It's actually a foam/fabric sandwich glued to the solid backing, and when the foam gets old, it starts disintegrating. And the only way to really fix it is to take out the whole headliner, scrape off all the fabric and groadilated foam crud, and glue a new piece of headliner fabric/foam on. But I didn't want a plain headliner and figured, if I was going through all that trouble, I might as well get a fabric I liked.

This forum had a really good post that I used as my guide. Here's the ceiling after I got the liner out. There were industrial felt insulating panels above it that came out too. The dangly bits are the old glue that held the felt on.

Here's the headliner on newspaper, on a blanket, in the driveway, one strip of fabric removed. It really is just a big piece of cardboard. The crumbly foam dust underneath was just gross. I used a little plastic putty knife to scrape most of it off, then worked it over with a stiff-bristle scrub brush.

Here's the oilcloth almost finished, just the sun visor recesses left to do. I used the scrub brush to smooth the oilcloth down, kind of like putting up wallpaper.

Note to anyone else trying this: there's a reason headliner fabric is knit — it has enough give to go over all the curves and recesses easily. Oilcloth is NOT flexible in that way, although working on it in the sun did heat it up and make it a little stretchy. There were a few wrinkles and folds in the end.

All done, trimmed, ready to go back in.

The finished liner! There's another reason headliner is foamy on the back: it hides all the surface bumps. The shiny surface of the oilcloth and the fact that it's pretty thin, mean that you can see every little ding and crumb on the cardboard.

Bram decided that to celebrate, I should drive us to Sonic for shakes and tots.
